Lower Wilson covers 1,380 acres with a depth of up to 106 feet
centered around Rum Mountain and overshadowed by the Scammon Ridge and Elephant
mountains. A narrows connects the Lower
and Upper Wilson Ponds. Both ponds are
fished for brook trout, lake trout, and land locked salmon.
The Moosehead Lake Region is a particularly important region
in Maine as it encompasses an area of 4,400 square miles, including 625 lakes
and ponds 10 acres or larger and 655 ponds less than 10 acres (24 percent of
all lakes and ponds in Maine), as well as 4,200 miles of rivers and streams
that comprise the headwaters of the Kennebec, Penobscot and St. Johns rivers.
